Olathe police are investigating the possible theft of more than $10,000 from an elementary school’s parent-teacher organization.

The possible theft of PTO funds from Westview Elementary School was reported to police last month.

The report involves $10,640 taken between Aug, 1, 2010, and the end of June this year, according to Olathe police. Detectives are continuing the investigation. No charges had been filed Wednesday.

School PTOs operate independently within each school and maintain their own funds separate from school district funds, said John Hutchison, chief financial and operations officer for the Olathe school district.

Twice a year, the district conducts workshops and provides information to PTO members about safeguards and best practices for handling funds, Hutchison said.

It is the second incident this year in which PTO funds were reported missing at a Johnson County school.

In April, about $30,000 was reported missing from the PTO at Valley Park Elementary School in Overland Park. Last week, prosecutors charged the former treasurer of the Valley Park PTO with felony theft.
