Entering the third and final round of the Sunflower League girls golf championship Wednesday at St. Andrews Golf Club, Olathe Northwest had a 4-stroke lead in its bid for a second straight league crown.

But the Ravens, who shot 346 as a team, finished 11 shots behind Shawnee Mission East at the Olathe East Invitational and wound up 7 shots behind the Lancers in the final standings.

“The girls were slightly disappointed because they’re competitors and they wanted to win, but we also knew that Shawnee Mission East has a very good golf team and 4 strokes is the slimmest of margins,” ONW coach Mardy Ortman said.

But Ortman isn’t worried that the runner-up league finish will carry over to the regional meet Monday at Overland Park Golf Course — at least not in a negative way.

“If anything, I think our girls are more motivated to win a regional title because of the second-place finish in league,” Ortman said.

Despite stubbing a toe in the team race, the Ravens did have the Sunflower League’s individual champ for a second straight season as junior Audrey Judd capped a wire-to-wire victory.

Judd was remarkably consistent, backing up consecutive rounds of 74 in the first two league contests with a 75 at St. Andrews for a three-round total of 223.

“We expected Audrey to have a big year for us,” Ortman said. “She competed very well on a national level this summer and she’s one of the fiercest competitors in the state.”

SM East’s Anne Willman, who was the league champ two years ago as a sophomore, shaved 2 shots from Judd’s lead at St. Andrews but still wound up second by 2 strokes (225).

Judd’s teammate, senior Cassie Wang, who won league as a junior, finished third (242), while Olathe North senior Megan Manning wound up fourth overall (252).

Olathe South junior Bailey Gibson fired 79 in the final round at league and finished sixth overall (256).

Hawks snag second at league tennis

Powered by runner-up finishes from both doubles teams, Olathe East finished second last week at the Sunflower League tennis championships.

Senior Hannah Heaton and junior Mollie Magee reached the No. 1 doubles final before succumbing 6-2, 6-3 against SM East’s Elizabeth and Stephanie Wilcox.

Meanwhile, junior Carley Mitus and sophomore Courtney Child also played for a title, dropping two sets at love against another Lancers duo, junior Meredith Shackelford and freshman Aidan Epstein.

Hawks sophomore Erica Chang was the top finisher from Olathe in No. 1 singles, reaching the semifinals and winding up fourth, while Olathe South senior Taylor Stout snagged sixth place overall.

Finally, junior Hannah Fain claimed fifth in No. 2 singles with an 8-0 win against SM South’s Emily Anderson.

Several other city squads had notable performances as well with senior Kylie Proctor and junior Tessa Ziu winding up fourth in No. 1 doubles for Olathe Northwest.

Meanwhile, Ravens senior Haley Egan and sophomore Annie Hermsen claimed fifth in No. 2 doubles.

Hawks’ Smith headed to Annapolis

Kyle Smith, an Olathe East senior, accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy last weekend.

Smith, a clutch performer and three-point assassin, is a shooting guard for the Hawks and also plans to play basketball for the Midshipmen.

He averaged 13.7 points per game last season, shooting 36 percent from distance and 78 percent from the free-throw line in helping coach Jim Super’s squad reach the Kansas 6A state tournament for the second consecutive season.
