Drawing the No. 6 seed Thursday seemed to motivate Olathe Northwest’s Trevor Moy and Dominic Fabiano during the 2012 Sunflower League Boys Tennis Championship at the Indian Creek Recreation Center.

Moy and Fabiano weren’t arguing that the seed didn’t accurately reflect the season so far, but the Ravens duo believed they were better than several teams that had handed them slender losses earlier in the season.

Capitalizing on the chance to prove it, Moy and Fabiano upset their way to the No. 1 doubles final before running into one of the state’s top teams, SM East’s Jackson O’Gorman-Bean and Jake Glazer.

Still, second place felt good for the ONW pair.

“We were expecting to finish fifth or sixth, but after we got that first upset against Shawnee Mission West in the second round, we gained some confidence and felt like, ‘Hey, we can do this,’” Moy said.

Fabiano and Moy started with a routine 8-1 win against Olathe East’s Seth Eaton and Jake Byrd.

Next came a matchup with the No. 3 seed, SM West’s Kevin Cao and Bret Niese — a 9-7 upset win for the Ravens’ tandem.

Clashing with the No. 2 seed, SM Northwest’s Connor Holman and Connor Mitts, the upset train rolled along as Moy and Fabiano cruised 6-1, 6-2.

“We had already played both of those teams and we knew what to do and what not to do against them,” Fabiano said. “But we were a lot more focused and executed the game plan. We went as hard as we can.”

O’Gorman-Bean and Glazer dispatched Northwest’s top team 6-2, 6-0 in the final.

“Being able to upset the two and three seeds really pushed us,” Fabiano said. “That last match, we just ran into a great team — a team that might win state.”

With a significantly improved seed thanks the league performance, Moy and Fabiano ought to have a better shot at reaching state from next week’s regional meet.

“Now, we have a lot more confidence, especially after today, and it feels like we could go a lot farther,” Moy said. “State is a possibility for sure, but we’re not going to jump to any conclusions or get our hopes up. We just have to play good tennis.”

Olathe South’s Connor Petty snagged third in No. 2 singles. He opened by beating Olathe East’s Garrett Small at love in a super set and reached the semifinals with an 8-5 win against SM West’s Stephen Sawatzky.

Eventual champion Jamie McDonald stopped Petty’s run there, but bounced back to beat Lawrence Free State’s Josh Saathoff for third place in a 5-7, 7-5, 10-3 marathon.

“I just kept fighting,” Petty said.

Now, the Falcons look forward to the regional meet.

“It would be awesome if we could get some guys to state, and I think we have the right team to do it,” Petty said.

South finished tied for sixth with Olathe Northwest.

“Overall, we’re playing well as a team,” Falcons coach Jon Renberger said. “These guys are playing well, and they like each other and support each other. Having four seniors has helped. It’s given us a lot of leadership and some experience.”

The top finisher in No. 1 singles was Olathe North’s Austin Crist, who placed sixth.

Initially seeded fourth, Crist lost to eventual league runner-up Kevin Kochersperger of SM South after an opening-round bye.

He then bounced back to beat Olathe South’s Michael Serwatka 8-1 and advance to the fifth-place match, where Lawrence’s Thomas Irick claimed an 8-1 win.

Serwatka, who topped Olathe Northwest’s Taylor Fickey 8-6 in the first round, wound up eighth.

The Ravens had the top No. 2 singles pairing, Tim Mayes and Cody Connelly, who finished fifth with a 8-4 win against Lawrence Free State’s Brandon Juracek and Miles Stevens.
