Charles "Mike" Heptas, 55, of Olathe, Kan., went to his eternal home, Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, after a valiant battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 5, at Grace United Methodist Church, Olathe. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley, Kan. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe. The family suggests contributions to Boy Scout Troop 315, Caring Bridge, Heritage UMC Trustees fund, or Grace UMC.

Mike was born Dec. 27, 1954, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles Rudy and Doris Neil Heptas. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1969 and continued his dedication to scouting as an adult Scouter. He graduated from Center High School in 1973, before graduating Magna Cum Laude from Avila College. He then went to work for the Olathe Police Department before retiring after 28 years with the Lenexa Police Department as a sergeant. One of his professional accomplishments was the development of the Citizens Police Academy and the volunteer program at the Lenexa Police Department. He was a member of Grace, Stillwell and Heritage UMCs and was an active volunteer with Heritage Elementary, Olathe South Band and Project Graduation, and the UM church. He will be remembered by many for his humor and courage.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dee Ann Heptas, and one son, Charles L. Heptas, both of the home. He is also survived by his mother, Doris Heptas of Kansas City, Mo., as well as his sister, Holly Gilday, and husband, Mark, of Leawood, Kan., and his nieces and nephew, Jessica, Anna and Tim.
