Olathe Northwest made it respectable, but Washburn Rural was too tough in the end, handing the Ravens a season-ending 1-0 loss Thursday during the Kansas 6A Central regional 1 championship in Topeka.
The Junior Blues, who are 17-1-0 overall, got a penalty kick goal from senior Levi Brunton in the 28th minute. Washburn Rural's defense, led by goalkeeper Justin Ives, made it stand up.
“I was a lot more impressed with the way we played in the second half than I was with the first,” ONW coach Chris Graham said. “They came out and pretty much dominated the first half. They are a big, physical, strong team and they took it to us in the first half.”
The Ravens, 10-7-1, played a man down after Danny Kessler picked up a red card in the second half but acquitted themselves well.
“We actually created some chances even a man down, so I was pretty pleased with the effort considering that, but we just weren't able to finish,” Graham said.
