The holiday season begins today in Independence.

A lighting ceremony starts at 5 p.m. at Independence Square, a few blocks southwest of the intersection of Truman and Noland roads. Lights will illuminate square shops as well as the old Jackson County “Truman” Courthouse, which has received about $776,000 in renovations, returning it to its 1933 appearance.

Officiating will be Independence Mayor Don Reimal and Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, who will read “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” at 5:45 p.m., with the lights being switched on about 6 p.m.
