Edwardsville rejects tax

Edwardsville voters on Tuesday rejected a half-cent sales tax increase.

The measure failed by a vote of 185 to 165. The increase was to be used for basic city services. The tax, which would not have had an expiration date, would have generated $170,000 a year. It would have taken the overall sales tax in the city from 7.30 percent to 7.80 percent. The overall sales tax in neighboring Bonner Springs is 8.050 percent. In Kansas City, Kan., the rate varies from 7.550 percent to 8.550 percent.

Fairway approves tax

Fairway voters approved a half-cent increase in the city’s sales tax by a vote of 794 to 452.

The increase will become effective April 1 and will be eliminated in 20 years. The new revenue will be used to pay for capital improvements and reduce the city’s $9.9 million debt. The current sales tax rate is 1 cent on each $1 of retail spending.

Voters submitted their ballots by mail. Slightly more than one-third of the eligible voters in Fairway cast ballots.
