State track: Reid, Reinke finish second, third in triple jump

South's Harris, Colwell nab third-place medals

Courtney Reinke squealed and jumped around in celebration with Olathe East teammate Ashley Reid after hearing the mark for her fifth triple jump Friday during the 2008 Kansas Track and Field State Championship at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium.

Reinke, a junior, had been striving to crack 38 feet all season.

Finally, on her second jump in the Class 6A girls triple jump final, she'd reached that elusive mark. Better yet, her 38 feet-0 3/4 inch jump had moved her ahead of Blue Valley West's Sarah Buschmann and into first place.

"That's all that mattered," said Reinke, who entered state hoping she and Reid could finish first and second in the event. "I hoped it would be enough (for a title), but being only the second jump in finals, I knew there was a possibility people could come back and jump further than that."

Buschmann did precisely that on her final try with a 38-6 triple jump.

The pressure was squarely on Reid and Reinke, who were the only two remaining jumpers.

Reid was up first and uncorked a great jump, but she didn't appear to finish it as she stood up the landing.

"I thought I scratched that last one," Reid said. "I had no idea it was a mark, so I was kind of disappointed because I really wanted to get that 38-6."

She hadn't scratched, though, and that final jump was measured at 38-2 1/2 inches. Had she only pulled hard at the end of her third phase, there's no telling how far she might have jumped. Perhaps she'd have won the state title.

"I didn't feel my foot hit the board at all, but now I know to finish it next time," said Reid, who also is a junior.

Reinke didn't have another 38-foot jump in her that last effort, leaving Buschmann as the 6A champ while Reid and Reinke settled for second and third, respectively.

There were no regrets, though.

"It feels so good, you don't even know," said Reid, who only started triple jumping last month. "I'm so happy, because it was beyond my expectations. Getting to state was exciting for me, but second at state is amazing."

Reinke, who'd hoped for a state title, wasn't down either.

"I'm extremely happy," Reinke said. "The points would have been nice (for the team), because we really want to take first. But I will take third jumping 38 (feet). It's my PR, and that's what I've been working for all season — to jump 38."

The goal next year again will be to finish first and second at state.

"We're definitely going to get better," Reid said. "We're only going up from here."

Of course, the state meet isn't done for Reid or Reinke. The defending 6A high jump champ, Reid will try to repeat Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Reinke, meanwhile, competes in the long jump at 11:30 a.m.

On the track, the Hawks 400-meter relay posted the best preliminary time and eased into Saturday's final.

Sophomore Breeana Coleman and senior Nayshona Jones each qualified for the 100 hurdles final, while Coleman reached the 200 final and Jones qualified for the 300 hurdles final.

South boys rack up third-place finishes

Reggie Harris prefers to long jump before he triple jumps at meets, but the state tournament schedule didn't afford him that opportunity.

"The triple jump always messes up my heels," the Olathe South junior jumper said, explaining his preference.

He also had about 90 minutes between events — enough time for his muscles to cool and stiffen a bit, but not long enough to recuperate fully.

Still, Harris shrugged off the less-than-ideal schedule and finished third in both events.

Harris leapt 22 feet and 1 1/4 inch in the long jump, his favorite event. That's a good mark, but far from the 24 feet he'd hoped to soar.

"I feel like I could have done better, so it's disappointing," Harris said. "But it's always fun to compete."

BV West's Richard McCoy repeated as state champ, winning the 6A long jump with a 24-foot jump.

But Harris, who placed fifth in the event as a sophomore, already had a sense of perspective.

"The guys who beat me are seniors, so I'll have my year next year," Harris said. "I've been going up two places every year at state, so I've got to first now. I've got to."

In his second season as a triple jumper, Harris was thrilled to finish third in that event.

And he wasn't the Falcons' only third-place finisher.

Senior Tom Colwell was third in the javelin with a throw of 175 feet.

"I was hoping to get second before I realized the kid from Wichita East was throwing 219," Colwell said. "But there was a lot of pressure for the rest of us trying for third."

Shawnee Mission South's Johannes Swanepoel and Matthew Byers from Wichita East battled for first well above the previous 6A state meet record. That left everyone else to duel for third.

"It was amazing to watch them," Colwell said. "They're freaks."

He felt privileged to be throwing alongside them at state in some ways — heck, to be throwing at state period.

"I've been just trying to get to state the last two years," said Colwell, who finished fifth at regional meets his sophomore and junior seasons. "It feels real good knowing this is my last memory from being at South."

Senior teammate Jake Aronson finished sixth in the javelin.

Sophomore Logan Ponder, meanwhile, tied for fourth in the high jump.

On the track, South's 400 relay qualified for the final. Two members of that relay, seniors Evan Pierson and Tyler Lira, also reached the 200 final.

Senior Brittany Harding provided the biggest highlight for the Falcons girls, posting the best preliminary time in the 100 hurdles.

ONW's Mona nabs first state medal

Olathe Northwest senior Katie Mona picked up a team point for the Ravens, placing seventh in the 3200 meters — a race that took place at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning.

She edged teammate and fellow senior Rebeka Stowe, who placed eighth.

Of course, the race probably will be remembered most as the first state race Blue Valley Northwest's Laura Roxberg lost.

A three-time state cross country champion who also won the last three 800 and 1600 6A state titles, Roxberg finished a distant second to Manhattan's Marley Crusch in her first crack at the 3200 state title.

ONW senior Jeff Thomas matched Stowe's eighth-place finish in the discus, while two other Ravens reached finals.

Senior Brian Woods ran the second-fastest preliminary time in the 110 hurdles, while junior Kylie Seurer qualified in the 100 hurdles.

Catloth leads North on first day

Senior Jake Catloth reached Saturday's event final in the 110- and 300 hurdles.

He also anchored the 1600 relay, which also qualified for the final.

In field events, senior Jon Chmiel claimed seventh in triple jump, while sophomore Mary Riley placed eighth in the javelin.

Sunflower kids nab titles

Olathe's track programs didn't nab any state titles Friday at the 6A state tournament, but Sunflower League boys did collect four championships.

Shawnee Mission South senior Justin Holmes won the shot put and and discus title, while Raiders sophomore Johannes Swanepoel broke the 6A javelin record, winning the event with a personal record 221-foot, 2-inch throw.

SM East's Curran Darling won the boys high jump, clearing 6-6.
