North, South gymnastics qualify for state

The Olathe North and Olathe South gymnastics teams have trained together throughout the season.

Last Saturday, during the regional tournament at North, the sister teams also qualified for state together, finishing 0.250 points apart and grabbing the final two team slots.

As expected, Free State, which had won the Sunflower League title nine days earlier, won handily.

The Firebirds, led by individual all-around champion Drue Davis, totaled 104.700 points, which was nearly three full points more than runner-up Newton.

Lizzie Sanford turned in the top all-around score for the Eagles, who finished with 95.575 points to claim third place.

Sanford finished fourth overall, earning additional medals on the uneven bars (6th), balance beam (3rd), floor exercise (6th) and vault (3rd).

The top scorer for the Falcons was Megan Williams, who finished sixth in the all-around. South's only event medal came from Bethany Eason, who was third on the floor.

The Kansas state meet is Saturday at Newton High School.
