Olathe South got off to a perfect start Friday afternoon during the opening round of the Kansas 6A state volleyball tournament at the Kansas Expocentre.

The Falcons, who were seeded No. 3 overall, battered Wichita Northwest 25-19, 25-19 to kick off pool play and took the first game from Blue Valley North 28-26 in the second contest.

But South, which beat the Mustangs earlier in the season during a home quad, faltered after that, losing four of the next five games and failing to reach Saturday's semifinal round.

BV North, which went to place fourth, clipped the Falcons 25-21, 25-23 in the second and third games to steal away the victory.

Needing a win against second-seeded Manhattan to finish among the final four in 6A, South got crushed 25-15 in the opening game.

The Falcons, who beat Manhattan during the Shawnee Mission South Tournament in September, showed some heart, rallying for a 27-25 win in the second game and keeping fading title hopes alive.

But Manhattan eked out a 25-23 win in the decisive game, ending South's season at 31-6 overall.
