A man suspected of sexually assaulting a 55-year-old Olathe woman Sunday morning is in police custody in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
No that's not a typo. Olathe police detectives are working with federal authorities to extradite John N. Gichamu, the department said.
"It's pretty unusual," Sgt. Johnny Roland, an Olathe police spokesman, said of locating a suspect in another country and one so far away. He said it was the result of a lot of good police work and cooperation with several agencies. Gichamu, 25, was being sought by police after fleeing a residence in the 23000 block of West 126th Terrace after reportedly sexually assaulting a woman he knew.
Olathe detectives had been working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to locate Gichamu. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should call the Olathe Police Department at 971-7455 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
