A Spring Hill city councilmember will oppose Rep. Mike Kiegerl, a Republican, for the 43rd District seat in the Kansas House of Representatives.

Democrat Scott Snavely, in a statement, said he wants to tackle important issues that matter to Kansans.

“I often hear that nothing can get done in Topeka because of the deep divisions between the two political parties as well as divisions within the Republican Party itself," he said. "It’s time that Kansans stood up and said, ‘Enough is enough.’ Ideology should never stand in the way of doing what is right for citizens of Kansas."

A 1989 graduate of Gardner-Edgerton High School, Snavely, 37, went on to receive his bachelor's degree in social sciences and later his education degree from Emporia State University.

Snavely and his family moved to Spring Hill in 2003. He teaches ninth-grade world history and coaches football at Santa Fe Trail Junior High School in the Olathe school district. Snavely was elected to his first four-year term to the Spring Hill City Council last year.

Snavely and his wife, Jacque, who operates a day care from their home, have three sons.

A campaign kickoff rally for Snavely will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gardner's Senior Citizen Community Center, 128 E. Park St.
